The Extramarital Sexual Behavior of Schoolteachers

It was approaching dusk on an autumn afternoon in 1994 when I went to Baixiu Village Primary School hoping to interview some teachers there. Baixiu Village Primary School occupies a large area. It was established in 1987. The building cost was about 800,000 yuan. At that time, this was a very large sum for a public expenditure. It would not have been possible without the rural economic reform and opening up. In fact, the buildings of the primary school have a rather modern appearance, but they lack repairs and maintenance, and look rather rundown now. In China, this is a very common phenomenon in buildings several years after they are built.

I went into the school’s main entrance. It was very quiet and no one was in sight, probably because classes were finished for the day. In the corridor, I ran into a young woman in her mid-twenties. I thought she was one of the teachers and told her the purpose of my visit. She thought for a moment and said that all teachers had gone home except one—Mr. Wang, who came from Guangxi Province. He boarded at school and therefore might be available for an interview. She led me to Mr. Wang’s room, which was located next to the stairs. Mr. Wang answered the door. He appeared to be about thirty years old, 160 centimeters tall, and of medium build. He was wearing a T-shirt and shorts. He looked friendly and invited me into his room.

The boarding room was approximately 7 square meters in size. There was a bunk bed on one side and a wooden desk and two chairs on the other. Mr. Wang was preparing his dinner. The food was simple. He used an electric rice cooker to make rice and steam vegetables and meat.

Mr. Wang told me that he was originally from Guangxi and was thirty-one years old. He had been a teacher in his hometown for over ten years. He was introduced through some friends to the teaching position at Baixiu Village Primary School. He left his wife and two children to take up teaching at Baixiu Primary since the beginning of this school term. Mr. Wang was content with his present salary, which earned him a total of slightly more than 900 yuan a month including a bonus and cash rewards. Although his income was from 200 to 500 yuan less than what the local teachers earn, it was much higher than what he made in his hometown, where he could only get 250 yuan a month.

My first conversation with Mr. Wang covered only very general topics. Since it was our first meeting, Mr. Wang, though talkative, spoke rather cautiously. Later, each time I went to Baixiu Village, I would visit him and invite him to dinner. We gradually knew each other better and our discussion became more in-depth.

During some of our conversations, Mr. Wang expressed some dissatisfaction with the interpersonal relationships at the school as well as students’ learning attitude.
